The gods’ landscape: Greek sanctuaries of classic age and their natural environment

Abstract
This essay seeks to characterize the relationship between several factors involved in the settlement of a Greek sanctuary in a specifi c natural environment. The paper will focus on three main aspects of the sanctuary: the genius loci, the historical and mythical precedents, and the intentional contrast among the architectural and the natural forms.
