misogynous dread: Woman as sublime monster in Juan carlos Onetti’s «el infierno tan temido»
Main Article Content
Abstract
In Juan carlos Onetti’s short story «el infierno tan temido» the female monster can be observed in detail. According to mary helene huet, like a woman, the monster, —sign of disorder in a system that seeks the normalization of the bodies — is defined by its imposture, for its capacity to mutate and adopt other identities in an incredible display of masquerades. The story ends with the suicide of the main character and the survival of women, crucial features for the exaltation of women as sublime monsters. The grotesque imaginary (bakhtin) that i privilege in this reading reveals the extent of this monster, for the «grotesque»evokes the image of the cave-like female body.
