Intention, chance and significance in the photography archive

Abstract
This essay presents a reflection on the importance of the specific intention of the author, of the context, and of chance, as determining factors in the possible significance given to archive photographs. It also analyses the complex relationship between the images and those who interpret them. Moreover, the study considers as key elements in the process of signification the particular perspectives from which photographs are approached.
