Abstract
This paper presents an analysis ofthe nature ofshortfilm asfragmented discourse in contrast with the 'grand' narratives offered byfeaturefilms, which are considered as creations which tend to establish received ideas. In this way, the shortfilm emerges and is defined from its great creative and discursive potential which allows for experimentation and the recycling of materials. Finally, the article considers the
substantialproduction ofshortfilms in Chile to give apluralistic account ofthe changes which influence their development.
